When you wake up on a Saturday to the corn 🌽 harvest 🚜 next door. I always love 💕 this day each year. But this year it came earlier than it should. By about a month. They couldn’t wait any longer.
This has been a rough year for Spanish farmers. The hottest 🥵 summer ever recorded in Spain. ZERO rain for months. And the lowest grain yields ever. Estimates in the newspaper say a 50% reduction in feed grains for dairy 🐄 and other livestock 🐖 🐓 . But we see it differently. Normally, the corn stocks next door are as tall as Jeff and have two or three large ears of corn. Not this year. This year the stocks are short and dry. Some stocks have zero ears. Others, have one small ear, one half the normal size. By our unscientific estimates it looks to be a 70% reduction in grain output. And with the war in the Middle East, diesel prices make the act of harvesting this paltry crop even more expensive. I expect our neighbors who have dairy, egg, and pig farms will be hurting this year. As will consumers. Buckle up, buttercups! It’s gonna be an expensive year.
