I thought I might give you guys a taste of what you can expect in Book Two: The Weight of Fearsome Things. And, perhaps a little refresher is in order.

If you remember, we left off in Book One: The Grief of Goodbye – John and Javier were having a moment. Unable to avoid each other at the wedding of their children, a bargain is struck between the two rivals for Tess’s affection. But in the sunlight of the days following, each of them are wondering what they’ve gotten themselves into.

[ ]Javier confided their agreement to Ines, his housekeeper and confidant of many years. She was making lunch when he sat at the kitchen table and confessed what he had done.
‘This is good.’ she said, her wise smile confirming her opinion as she stirred the pot on the stove.
‘You think so?’ he scowled.
‘Yes. Tess wanted this. It’s healing for the two of you to go and walk a Camino for her. John has some unfinished business. And so do you, I think.’
Javier remained unconvinced.
‘It’s the last thing I thought I would have to do when she made me promise. Maybe I was a little drunk.’ he said, plopping some of Ines’s famous bread and olive oil into his mouth.
But Ines was having none of it.
‘No. I saw you before the wedding. You were not drunk. I think you sensed that John is still in pain and thought to ease it. You have something in common, the two of you. Grieving the same person. You will help each other.’
Javier nodded. Perhaps Ines was right.
‘A lot can happen on the Camino.’ she walked behind his chair, patting his shoulder. ‘No one should know that better than you.’
